Work vs. Rest – Is there a balance?

If you feel like you’re always “on” — doing, thinking, serving, planning — and still not doing enough… It might be time to ask: What does God say about work vs. rest?

Hey there, I hope you’re having a fantastic day so far. If not, well maybe reading this can help 😉.

Last week, we talked about the tension between trusting God and trying to control everything ourselves. If you missed it, you can catch it here.

This week, let’s talk about what it actually looks like to live a balanced  life.

But not what your favorite self-help guru says – what God actually says.

Let’s be honest:

We hear a lot about “balance your life,” “self-care,” and “hustle and rest.”

We even hear – there’s no such thing as balance.

That successful people push really hard to get to where they are, sacrificing their health and wellbeing.

But sometimes, those messages just leave us more exhausted and confused.

Yep, that sums up worldly advice perfectly.

And that’s why we go straight to the source for advice instead.

So let’s see what the Bible says about balance.

❓ What is Biblical Balance?

I’ll tell you what it’s not.

It’s not living a life that is perfectly managed where nothing is ever neglected.

It’s not about doing everything perfectly and equally – it’s not a 50/50 lifestyle.

It’s not just about organizing your calendar and making time to do all the tasks.

But instead, biblical balance is about emulating God’s rhythm of work and rest.

It’s about intentionally aligning the various areas of your life under God’s guidance

So that your work, rest, priorities, and relationships honors Him and sustains you.

And God did a great thing

He gave us the perfect example in Genesis 2:2:

“By the seventh day, God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work.”
— Genesis 2:2

Just like God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh (Genesis 2:2–3), biblical balance includes both purposeful work and intentional rest.

God didn’t rest because He was tired.

He rested to set a rhythm — a sacred balance that we were designed to live by.

💬 Here’s the truth:

Remember that Jesus modeled this beautifully.

He served, taught, healed, and led crowds

But He also withdrew to lonely places to pray.

He rested. He paused. He protected His quiet time with the Father.

If Jesus needed to rest — so do we!

You can work hard without being driven by pressure.

And you can rest well without feeling guilty.

But only when your identity is rooted in God, not in what you do.

⚙ Here are 5 Simple Steps to create Biblical Balance in your life:

  1. Surrender first:
Start your day by giving God control instead of relying on your own plans.
  2. Clarify priorities:
Focus on what God is truly calling you to in this season—not everything.
  3. Set boundaries:
Protect your peace by saying no to what God didn’t assign to you.
  4. Honor rhythms:
Work diligently, then rest confidently, trusting God to sustain you.
  5. Walk with the Spirit:
Let the Holy Spirit guide your pace and decisions daily.

Remember balance isn’t something we find.

It’s something we build slowly, prayerfully, intentionally.

🛠️ Let’s S.O.A.R. into the Week

🧠 S – Shift Your Mindset
Ask yourself: Am I working from rest or working for rest?
One is based on grace. The other is based on striving.

👀 O – Observe Blessings
Look at your calendar or week ahead.
Where has God already made space for rest but you’ve filled it with “just one more thing”?
Can you reclaim one of those spaces this week?

💬 A – Affirm the Truth
This week’s affirmation:
“God created me for both purpose and pause and I honor Him when I live in both.”
Repeat it in the morning, during busy moments, or whenever you feel overwhelmed to realign your heart with His rhythm.

💡 R – Resourcefulness Tip
Tip of the Week: Create “White Space.”
Give yourself 10 minutes of silence every day — no phone, no talking, no multitasking.
Just breathe and ask, “Lord, what needs to stay? What needs to go?”
You’d be surprised how much clarity He gives in the quiet.

✋ Your Turn

Let me know in the comment section below:

Which one are you better at — working or resting?
Which one do you tend to feel guilty about?

Remember, God isn’t asking you to hustle endlessly or disappear into self-care bubbles.

He’s inviting you into His rhythm – a life of purposeful work and peaceful rest.

This week, be bold enough to rest and faithful enough to work from that rest.

Let’s make every Monday a fresh start with God!

Good reminder. We need rest.

Yes we so do. And it's a hard one when we are trying to produce or in a season of work. But by God's grace, we are reminded 😉
