OBEDIENCE IN A “Do-What-Feels-Good” WORLD

Living Surrendered in a Culture That Prioritizes Personal Freedom Over God’s Will

Is there a struggle between doing what feels good and following God’s word? This post comes from our weekly newsletter – Monday Morning Resetwhere we Get Rooted in Christ through our Core 4 – 1 Lesson, 1 Scripture, 1 Affirmation & 1 Question.

We’re continuing our series “CHRISTLIKE: Living Set Apart in Modern Times.” If you missed last week’s post on how to practice compassion in a numb society, you can catch it here.

📑 1 Lesson: Obedience in a “Do-What-Feels-Good” World

Have you noticed how often we hear things like, “Follow your heart” or “Do what makes you happy”? 🖐

It’s everywhere – from movies, to social media, to well-meaning friends. And while it sounds nice, the truth is… what feels good in the moment doesn’t always lead us closer to God.

Think about it: It feels good to hit snooze instead of spending quiet time with God, it feels easier to avoid that tough conversation instead of speaking truth with love and it feels more comfortable to go along with what everyone else is doing than to stand firm in your convictions.

But Christ calls us to something different. He doesn’t say, “Do what’s easy or comfortable,” He says, “Obey My will.” While the world measures success by personal freedom and instant gratification, Christ measures it by faithfulness and surrender, even when it’s inconvenient or misunderstood by others.

Look at Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. He faced the ultimate tension between His human desires and God’s will. He prayed, “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42). He didn’t chase comfort; He surrendered to God’s will, even when it was hard and that obedience brought life and salvation to the world.

So how do we practice obedience when our culture tells us to put comfort first? Here are a few simple ways:

  1. Pray before reacting. Instead of rushing with your feelings, pause and ask, “Lord, what honors You here?”
  2. Choose the small yes. Obedience isn’t always about big life decisions – it’s found in showing kindness, choosing integrity, or forgiving quickly.
  3. Surrender daily. Start your morning with a prayer like, “God, I want Your will more than mine today.”
  4. Stay accountable. Share one obedience goal with a friend or journal it – when it’s out in the open, it’s harder to ignore.

This week, let’s practice small acts of daily obedience: pray for God’s will over your desires, choose integrity over convenience, and make decisions that honor Him even when no one is watching. Each step of obedience, no matter how small, strengthens our faith and draws us closer to Christ.

📖 1 Scripture

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” – John 14:23

This verse reminds us that surrendering our will isn’t a limitation – it’s an invitation to intimacy with God. Obedience brings Him closer into every corner of our lives.

💬 1 Affirmation

“I choose obedience over convenience. I surrender my desires to God and invite Him to live in every part of my life.”

Repeat this whenever you feel pulled toward ease over God’s way.

❓ 1 Question

I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.

“What’s one area this week where I can choose God’s will over what feels easiest?”

Take a few moments to pray or journal about it. It could be reaching out to someone, letting go of control in an area, or simply pausing to pray before making a decision. Each time you say “yes” to God over convenience, your faith grows stronger, and your life stays anchored in His peace.

This world says, “Do what feels good.” Jesus says, “Follow Me.” Let’s choose Him in the little moments this week and experience the peace that only comes from surrendering to His will. Obedience won’t always feel comfortable, but it will always be worth it.

Next week, we’ll explore practicing Holiness in a Culture of Compromise. Can’t wait to walk through it with you.

Let’s stay rooted in Christ my friend,
