HUMILITY IN A “Look-at-Me” CULTURE

Choosing to Lower Yourself in a World Obsessed with Platforms and Recognition

While the world says “Look-at-Me,” the Bible says the opposite. This post comes from our weekly newsletter – Monday Morning Resetwhere we Get Rooted in Christ through our Core 4 – 1 Lesson, 1 Scripture, 1 Affirmation & 1 Question.

Let’s continue in our series “CHRISTLIKE: Living Set Apart in Modern Times.” If you missed last week’s post on how to love like Jesus in a self-centered world, you can catch it here.

📑 1 Lesson: Humility in a “Look-at-Me” Culture

Have you noticed how much of life today is about being seen? 🖐 – the number of followers, the applause at work, the recognition in our circles. Our culture constantly pushes us to build platforms and promote ourselves and in this environment, humility can feel outdated or even irrelevant.

But the problem with chasing recognition is that it makes us restless. When our worth is tied to attention, we’re only as secure as our last “like” or that last thing for which we were recognized. If you think about it long enough, you’ll realize that at the core of it is pure pride – our desire to be elevated instead of lowering ourselves like Christ. And the effect? A cycle of comparison, burnout, and never feeling “enough.”

But thank God for Jesus that He showed us the way. Christ modeled something radically different for us to follow. Philippians 2 says that though He was God, Jesus chose to lower Himself, taking the form of a servant, humbling Himself to the point of death on a cross. He had every right to demand honor, yet He embraced obscurity, service, and sacrifice.

So how can we practice humility like Christ in our society today? Well, it’s quietly serving without posting about it. It’s giving credit to others instead of grabbing it for ourselves. It’s choosing “invisible acts” of kindness – the kind that no one but God sees. See, these hidden choices may go unnoticed by the world, but they carry eternal weight.

And here’s the beautiful truth – when we humble ourselves, God promises to lift us up in His timing. That means we don’t have to fight for recognition because our Father sees, and that’s enough.

Friend, in a world that shouts “Look at me!,” let’s choose to reflect Christ when we say with our lives, “Look at Him.”

📖 1 Scripture

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” – James 4:10

This verse reminds us that humility isn’t about lowering our value but about trusting God to lift us at the right time, in His way.

💬 1 Affirmation

“I choose humility over recognition. I don’t need a platform to be valuable because my worth is secure in Christ.”

Repeat this when you feel overlooked or tempted to prove yourself and let it remind you that heaven sees what the world misses.

❓ 1 Question

I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.

“Where in my life am I seeking recognition instead of practicing humility?”

Take a few moments this week to reflect or journal on this question. Ask God to show you one way you can practice an “invisible act” of kindness or service. The unseen work of humility is often where He does His greatest work in us.

In a world that shouts, “Look at me!,” Christ calls us to quietly serve and let our lives point to Him. Let’s declare to practice humility not by lowering our value, but by lifting others up and trusting God with the recognition. Because when we live humbly, the world gets a glimpse of Christ’s heart.

Next week, we’ll talk about practicing compassion in a numb society – learning how to keep our hearts tender when the world tells us to toughen up. See you there.

Let’s stay rooted in Christ my friend,

You are so right Nikeba. This selfie culture is in direct contrast to God's will. God's says keep our eyes on Him but the world says, put self first!

Yes, yes and yes Charmaine. And though it can be hard sometimes as we are easily distracted, keeping in daily communion with Him makes it so much easier. Have a great day friend 😊
