Does seeing too much suffering make you numb to it all? This post comes from our weekly newsletter – Monday Morning Reset – where we Get Rooted in Christ through our Core 4 – 1 Lesson, 1 Scripture, 1 Affirmation & 1 Question.
Let’s continue in our series “CHRISTLIKE: Living Set Apart in Modern Times.” If you missed last week’s post on how to practice humility like Jesus in this “Look-at-me” culture, you can catch it here.
📑 1 Lesson: Compassion in a Numb Society
Have you noticed how much suffering you see in a single day? 🖐
Another tragedy on the news, another heartbreaking story on social media, another person asking for help at the corner.… and to be honest, after a while, we might become desensitized to it all and our hearts stop responding. Then instead of being moved, we scroll past or instead of pausing to pray, we shrug and keep moving.
It’s not that we don’t care, it’s that we’re constantly exposed to so much pain and suffering that our hearts grow numb, almost as a form of self-protection – we turn down the volume of compassion. Psychologists call it “compassion fatigue.” And when our hearts grow numb, it doesn’t just shield us from the world’s pain – it can also make us blind to the person right in front of us.
But Jesus showed us a different way. He never walked past suffering without stopping – He noticed the blind man when everyone else ignored him, He touched the leper when others scorned him, He paused for the bleeding woman in a pressing crowd. His compassion never ran out because it came from the Father’s love.
So how do we deal with it all? Well, remember that compassion isn’t about carrying all the world’s pain; a sure impossible feat. Rather, it’s about carrying one person’s pain at a time. While we may not be able to heal diseases or end global crises, we can stop to listen, we can send an encouraging message, or whisper a prayer for someone who comes to mind. Jesus reminds us that even something as small as offering a cup of cold water in His name matters.
So this week, let’s ask God to soften our hearts daily, let’s slow down to notice the person in front of us, and let’s be present, trusting that even the smallest act of compassion is a seed of His love in a world that desperately needs to feel again.
📖 1 Scripture
“When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” – Matthew 9:36
Just like us, Jesus was surrounded by constant need, yet He didn’t grow numb. He looked with love and responded with compassion. That’s the posture we’re called to take in a desensitized world.
💬 1 Affirmation
“I choose to see others through Christ’s eyes and respond with love, one person at a time.”
Repeat this when you feel numb or tempted to scroll past suffering, and let it remind you that even small acts of love matter to God.
1 Question
I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.
“Where in my life have I grown numb to suffering, and how can I respond with compassion this week?”
Take time to reflect, pray, or journal. Remember – compassion isn’t about fixing everything, it’s about faithfully loving the one in front of you.
This week, let’s push back against numbness with tenderness. Because when the world sees compassion in us, they see Christ through us.
Next week, we’ll talk about practicing Obedience in a “Do-What-Feels-Good” World. See you then!
