Have you ever felt like you’re carrying something that just won’t let up – like no matter how hard you try, it’s still heavy? A lot of us think that’s just being strong, but really we’re exhausted from trying to control everything. And sometimes, we’ve picked up battles that were never ours to carry. But what if strength isn’t holding it all together… what if it’s letting go? The truth is, God never asked us to fight every battle – some things, He’s already taken care of.
So, here’s the promise: God will fight for us – not beside us while we figure everything out, not watching to see how we handle it first – He fights for His people.
And if we’re honest… that can feel a little hard to believe, because most of us are used to jumping in, fixing things, defending ourselves, proving our point or holding everything together. We’ve kind of learned that if we don’t handle it, no one will. So we carry it all – the stress, the pressure, the “what ifs”… even battles that were never ours to begin with. But that’s not what God intended for us.
This promise shows up in a really intense moment. In Exodus 14, the Israelites are literally trapped. The Red Sea is in front of them, Pharaoh’s army is behind them, and there is no way out. No plan, no control – just fear. And right there, in the middle of that panic, God says something unexpected: you don’t have to fight this one. Isn’t that just so amazing 🥰
But this is where we need to slow down for a second and get clarity because we often confuse control with courage.
Control says:
“I need to fix this.”
“I need to respond right now.”
“If I don’t handle it, it will fall apart.”
It feels strong, even responsible. But a lot of the time, it’s actually fear in disguise. We’re not stepping in because we’re bold, but because we’re scared of what will happen if we don’t.
Courage on the other hand sounds quieter. It says:
“I trust God sees this.”
“I don’t have to rush.”
“I can let go, even if I don’t know how this ends.”
And full disclosure – this kind of courage can feel way harder, because sometimes it doesn’t look like doing more – it looks like doing less, and that goes against our very nature. Not sending the message, not defending yourself, not trying to control every outcome – that can feel hard to do.
So how do we know what’s ours to carry and what’s God’s? Well, if it’s ours to carry, God will usually invite us to participate in it. That might look like having a hard conversation, setting a boundary, showing up with integrity, or taking the next right step. There’s movement there, but it’s steady, not frantic.
But if it’s God’s to carry, He will invite us to trust. And that usually involves the things we can’t control anyway like someone else’s heart, someone else’s opinion, the outcome, the timing or the results.
Here’s a simple tip – if it’s yours, there will be a sense of clarity, even if it’s hard. If it’s not, it will feel heavy, urgent, and overwhelming. God’s assignments come with grace but control comes with pressure.
So what does living from this actually look like? It looks like pausing before we react. It looks like not answering everything, not proving every point, not carrying every weight. It’s choosing to trust that God sees what we see, and even what we don’t. And remembering that He knows how to handle it better than we ever could.
So this week, let’s try a “Pause Before You Respond” moment.
When something triggers you – a message, a situation, a thought – don’t react right away. Just pause, take a breath, and quietly say, “God, is this mine to carry?”
Then wait and notice what comes up next.
If it feels calm, clear, and simple, like “have the conversation,” “be honest,” or “take the next step” – that’s likely your part. Take it, but don’t try to control what happens after.
But if it feels heavy, urgent, or like you’re trying to force an outcome – that’s your cue to release it. Instead of acting, say, “God, I trust You with this,” and let it sit with Him.
Remember, you don’t have to solve everything in the moment. Not everything needs your energy, not everything needs your voice; some things just need your surrender.
