God’s love is faithful — it doesn’t pull back when we mess up or have an off day.
But have you ever woken up still thinking about something you wish you did differently yesterday, and felt like you needed to “do better” before coming back to God? That’s what happens when we forget what His love is really like.
This week, our focus promise is: God’s love for us is faithful, and His mercy is new every morning.
Doesn’t that sound wonderful 😊. But if we’re being really honest, sometimes it can feel hard to truly believe this; not because we don’t want to, but often because of what we’re used to.
Most of us know a conditional love that looks like: “I love you because…”
- Because things are good.
- Because you showed up.
- Because you didn’t mess up too badly.
- Because we get along.
And when those things change, the love can feel like it changes too — changing with our feelings, with our emotions; it essentially becomes conditional. And without even realizing it, we start to think God works that way too.
We might think:
- “If I do good, God is close.”
- “If I mess up, He pulls back.”
- “Let me fix myself first, then I’ll come back.”
But God’s love is not like our human love. His love is constant and unchanging.
Check out this definition of the word Hesed (חֶסֶד) which is used in the bible to describe God’s love: it is a profound Hebrew term often translated as “steadfast love,” “loving-kindness,” or “loyal love,” appearing over 250 times in the Old Testament. It describes an active, covenant-based loyalty that exceeds mere legal obligation, combining mercy, faithfulness, and compassion. It is central to understanding God’s character and loving, relational nature.
Whew, now that’s faithful love.
However, the problem we often face is that most of us drag our yesterday into today — we wake up still carrying yesterday’s mistake, last week’s failure, last year’s regret. And that breeds shame, which is particularly good at convincing us that we’ve used up our chances, that God’s patience has limits, that we’ve pushed too far, or that we need to get ourselves together before we can come back. But none of that is true – because God’s love and mercy covers our shame.
We are reminded in Lamentations 3:22–23 that because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is His faithfulness.
Jeremiah didn’t write Lamentations from a comfortable place, but from a time when the people had lost their homes, their sense of safety and everything familiar. It was grief, confusion, and devastation all around. And right there, in the middle of that, Jeremiah says: God’s faithful love has not ended. His mercies are still new every morning.
Psalm 103:8-12 shows us that God is compassionate, slow to anger, removing our transgressions as far as the east is from the west. And 1 John 1:9 says if we confess, He is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse.
Scripture shows us that this promise of new mercy every morning is rooted in who God has always been. So our shame doesn’t cancel His mercy. We don’t have to hide, or wait or earn our way back to His love. Let’s remember that God’s faithfulness belongs to Him first, so even when we feel inconsistent, He is not, or when we fall short, His love doesn’t.
In our everyday lives, living from this promise can look like refusing to carry yesterday into today, letting today actually be a reset and remember that we can begin again because His love is faithful.
So this week, let’s practice a Let It Go Reset.
At the end of each day, take a quiet moment and ask: “What am I still holding onto that I don’t need to carry into tomorrow?”
Picture placing it in God’s hands — no fixing, no overthinking, just releasing. We weren’t designed to drag yesterday into every new morning. His mercies are new and that means today is actually new too.
