Have you ever felt stuck in your own head, going in circles trying to make the “right” decision? Like you keep thinking, “I just need to be sure first”… but the sure feeling never comes? And then you keep thinking about it so much that you end up doing… nothing?
Well, that’s what uncertainty can do to us — quietly keep us stuck.
But this week, we’re holding onto the promise that God doesn’t just give advice… He promises to lead us.
In Psalm 23, David calls God his shepherd. That wasn’t just poetic language because David had been a shepherd, so he knew exactly what that meant. He was saying, “The way I used to guide, protect, and stay close to my sheep… that’s how God is with me.”
And even before David wrote that, God had already been leading His people. He led Israel through the wilderness, and not with a full map, but with His presence that was just enough for the next step – a cloud by day, fire by night.
So when we read “The Lord is my shepherd,” it’s not just a nice verse — it’s a pattern. It’s how God has always led His people, and He hasn’t changed one bit.
But sometimes we think being led by God means we’ll feel completely certain all the time. Like we’ll just know every step before we take it. But that’s not really what we see in Scripture. Instead, we see people walking with God while things are still unclear. It reminds us that God’s leadership is relational, not mechanical or transactional.
It’s not “put in the right prayer, get a 5-step plan.” It’s staying close to Him, learning His voice, and moving when He gives a nudge. Jesus says in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice… and they follow me.” Notice that He doesn’t say they have the whole plan, He says they follow.
So what does it actually look like to live from this promise in real life?
Well, it looks like not waiting for perfect clarity before we move, opening our Bible and actually expecting God to guide us through it, pausing in the middle of a decision and asking, “God, what’s the next right step?” instead of “Show me everything.”
In essence, it looks like small obedience. Saying yes to the small inklings, taking the step that aligns with His Word, even if it feels too simple or unsure. And overall, trusting that God will meet us in that step and lead us again after it, even if we mess up.
When we do this, we actually stop letting uncertainty be the thing that decides if we move or not. Because while the uncertainty might still be there, and we might not see far ahead, it doesn’t get to lead us anymore — God does, and He’s not guessing; He sees the whole path.
Let’s remember that we don’t have to have it all figured out, we just have to stay close to our Shepherd… and take the next step with Him.
So this week, let’s practice Next Step Faithfulness.
Think about one area where you’ve been waiting for full clarity before moving. Ask honestly: do I know the next step, even if I don’t know the whole plan? If yes, take it. Remember, one faithful step is how a whole journey gets walked.
Then spend some time in Psalm 23. Read it slowly as a love letter from your Shepherd and let it remind you of who is doing the leading.
