JEHOVAH NISSI: THE LORD IS MY BANNER

The One who Fights for You and Gives Victory

Let’s meet Jehovah Nissi as we continue our series, “THE NAMES OF GOD: Discovering Who He Is.”

This post comes from our weekly newsletter – Monday Morning Resetwhere we Get Rooted in Christ through our Core 4 – 1 Lesson, 1 Scripture, 1 Affirmation & 1 Question.

📑 1 Lesson to Shape Our Mindset

So, Jehovah Nissi – it sounds poetic, but honestly, most of us don’t use the word banner outside of birthday parties or church graphics. When Moses first used this name in Exodus 17, though, it wasn’t decorative at all. It was a battle cry. After Israel defeated the Amalekites, a fight they absolutely shouldn’t have won on their own, Moses built an altar and named it “The Lord is my Banner.” It was his way of saying, “We didn’t win because we were strong. We won because God showed up.”

If we think about it, we all have banners – those things we hold up to represent who we are or what we lean on. Some days, our “banner” is confidence. Other days it’s coffee. And honestly, some days it’s pure survival mode. But Moses reminds us that when God is our banner, we fight differently. We don’t stand alone. We don’t carry our own strength like it’s all on us. We show up under the covering of Someone who actually knows what the battle requires.

And here’s the part I love: a banner isn’t something you clutch; it’s something raised above you. In other words, we don’t have to perform our way into victory. We can walk into whatever we’re facing knowing God goes before us, like a sign raised high saying, “This one is Mine. I’ve got this covered.”

So, what does this look like on a Monday morning? Maybe it means we stop pretending we’re fine when we’re exhausted. Maybe it means we hand over the things we’ve been wrestling in our own strength – the conversations we dread, the decisions we overthink, the situations we’ve tried to “fix” five different ways. The action step this week is simple: pick one battle and hand it over. Literally say, “God, You’re my banner here. I’m showing up, but You’re leading.”

📖 1 Scripture to Ground Our Spirit

“For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” – Deuteronomy 20:4 NIV

This verse reinforces the heart behind Jehovah Nissi: we don’t step into battles alone. God doesn’t just watch, He goes with us and fights for us.

💬 1 Affirmation to Speak Life

“I rest today under Jehovah Nissi, trusting God to fight for me in ways I cannot.”

Repeat this whenever your mind starts racing or the day feels heavier than you expected. It’s a reminder that you’re not the one holding everything up.

❓1 Question to Reflect & Reset

I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.

“What part of today’s lesson about Jehovah Nissi really spoke to you or challenged the way you’re thinking?”

Take a few moments to sit with this or jot down your thoughts to let it sink in today. Sometimes reflecting on what really hits us is the first step toward seeing God show up in our lives in a new way.

And as we step into this week, let’s remember that with Jehovah Nissi raised high over our lives, we don’t have to fight alone. We can face each day knowing victory isn’t up to our strength but is already covered by the One who fights for us.

Next week, we’ll meet Jehovah Shalom – The Lord Is Peace, and we’ll talk about how to find calm in chaos.

And if you missed our last post on the name Jehovah Rapha: The Lord Who Heals, you can catch it here.

Let’s stay rooted in Christ my friend,

A great reminder that we don't face life and its hurdles alone. God goes before us to prepare the way, all we have to do is believe in him and trust him.

I love these lines: The action step this week is simple: pick one battle and hand it over. Literally say, “God, You’re my banner here. I’m showing up, but You’re leading.” They’re a reminder that you don’t need to do it all. Do your part and let God do His part. Thank you.
