Have you ever heard of the Armor of God? If not, you are in exactly the right place — and if you have, we’re about to go a little deeper.
Here’s the thing, most of us are walking around every single day feeling the weight of real life. But it gets a little easier to handle when we know what to do and the Bible helps us with that. It teaches us to put on the armor of God so we can be prepared for life’s struggles.
So today we’re starting a brand new series titled, Putting on The Armor of God: A Journey through Ephesians 6:10-18 — and we’re beginning right at the foundation with The Belt of Truth: How to Stand Firm by Building Your Life on God’s Truth.
If you’ve never heard of the Armor of God, here’s a quick summary. There’s a letter in the Bible written by a man named Paul that constitutes the book of Ephesians and near the end of this letter is this incredible passage where he describes six pieces of spiritual armor and tells us to put them on. He uses this picture as a way of showing us what it looks like to be spiritually prepared for the very real battle that happens in our minds, our hearts, and our everyday lives. We’re going to walk through each piece together over the next several weeks.
Paul wrote this letter from a Roman prison, where he was probably chained to a guard, waiting to find out if he was going to live or die. He was writing to a church in Ephesus, a city that was practicing idol worship, occult practices, basically, a culture constantly pulling people away from their faith. The people who Paul was writing to weren’t strangers — he had spent three years there with them so these were his people and he wanted to make sure they were prepared.
So he uses the armor of the Roman soldier he was physically chained to for this illustration and the first piece he points to is the belt. Now that sounds quite simple, but stay with me. The belt in Roman armor wasn’t decorative – it cinched the tunic so the soldier could move freely without tripping over himself, it anchored the breastplate and it held the sword in place. Without it, everything else on that soldier would start to wobble and fall apart.
Paul calls this the Belt of Truth. Before anything else, before courage, before peace, before we pick up anything else God has given us, we need truth in place, specifically, what God says is true:
- about who He is – the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end
- about who we are – loved and accepted in Christ
- and about what this life is actually about – doing the will of God
So how do we actually put on this Belt of Truth?
Well, it starts with what we feed our minds. Every morning before the noise of the day gets loud — before the phone, the news, the to-do list — we take even just a few minutes to sit with what God says is true. This could be a verse, a reminder, a simple prayer that says “God, let Your truth be louder than everything else today.” That’s our imagery of buckling the belt.
It also means we get honest about the lies we’ve been living from. You know, that voice that says you’re behind, you’re too much, you’re not enough, God is tired of you — that’s not truth, that’s noise, and we don’t have to keep agreeing with it. When it shows up, we can name it and replace it. Not with positive thinking but with what God actually said.
And then we practice this on repeat because the belt doesn’t stay on by accident. We put it on every single day, on purpose, the same way that soldier geared up every morning knowing what was ahead.
So this week, let’s try a Truth Audit.
Pick one lie you’ve been living from — something you’ve been believing about yourself, your worth, or your situation that doesn’t line up with what God says. Write it down then look up one scripture that speaks directly against it and write that down too.
Put it somewhere you’ll actually see it — your mirror, your phone lock screen, a sticky note on your coffee maker. Every time you see it this week, read the truth out loud.
We’re not just collecting information here, we’re replacing the old story with the real one, one day at a time.
Please share your thoughts or reflections in the comment section below. Your perspective might just encourage someone else on their journey.
Next week, we’ll continue our series with Putting on The Breastplate of Righteousness. And if you missed my last post on God Promises Series Recap, you can catch it here.
